The Eighth of September
Olúwaṣeyifúnmi — the Lord has done this for me. He has spent a lifetime proving the name right.
Today is the day.
Some people you meet and forget.
This one you do not.
First, the smile
Ask anyone who knows him and this is where they start. Not with what he has achieved — with his face when he sees you.
It is not a courtesy. It is the overflow of a man who is actually, unmistakably glad you turned up. Whole days have been rescued by it. People carrying a heavy morning have walked away from two minutes with him lighter than they came, and could not entirely explain why.
Then, the willingness
Not the distance. Not the hour. Not how badly it cuts across his own day. Ask him for help and you will notice something missing from the conversation — the pause where most people weigh it up.
The people around him stopped being surprised by this a long time ago. They simply expect it now. Which is, if you think about it, the highest compliment a person can be paid.
And then, the example
There are people who tell you how to live, and people who simply live and let you watch. He has always been the second kind.
Younger men measure themselves against him without him ever inviting it. That is not authority he claimed. It is authority he was handed, quietly, by everyone who decided they would like to turn out like him.
Why heaven keeps saying yes
Generous before it becomes convenient. Faithful when nobody is counting. Kind where there is nothing at all to gain. Do that for long enough, in front of enough people, and it stops looking like luck.
He has positioned himself exactly there — and heaven has answered accordingly.
A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.Proverbs 11:25
All at once
Evidence
It is not possible to know him and not love him. Today, the rest of the world gets to say so out loud.
